Michael Dunn

12/19/1977 to 4/4/2003

Mike was a young man that I was just getting to know, when he was tragically killed in an auto accident by a reckless driver. It was a true tragedy in every sense. A young life was cut short, his first child (born just 6 months later) would never see her Father, and friends and family were left to make sense of a senseless event.

In the brief time that Mike was part of my life, I saw him as a kid who had already been through his fair share of tough times (including a successful high school battle with Hodgkins Disease). But, he was so full of energy and hope. His spark truly seemed to be caused by his journey for the truth. He was seeking God vigorously, as a participant in our church Alpha class (a bible study group) and adding his thoughts and questions to our deep discussions.

His spark really lit a flame when he brought up the fact that he enjoyed music, and that he played guitar and drums. The next thing we knew, our Pastor (Ted Mitchell) had tuned up his bass guitar and I had dusted off my acoustic and we started getting together at the church late at night, and pretending we were a praise band (although Mike liked to think we were a rock band). We played a few times in front of our church family and were really enjoying the fellowship that playing music (especially God-praising music) was providing.

I will never forget Mike’s funeral, but not so much because of the tragic nature of the surrounding events. My forever memory will be my complete recognition of how tragic his death could have been - if not for his desire to walk in faith. How hopeless and meaningless a life (especially taken in such a senseless manner) could have been if not for his faith and hope in God’s eternal promise.

Our band, after some time off, did get back together. The members have changed. We have gone from a sizeable praise band to a smaller, rockier version. But, our joy is still found in our love of music and our fellowship in Christ. Our name is inspired by Mike and serves as a constant reminder to me of just where to place my hope. In the short time I knew Mike he made an everlasting impression, and so - may all things be... Dunn By Faith.
